Read This Before You Convert an Epson

Epson sells EcoTank printers as ordinary inkjets, not as convertible sublimation printers. Conversion is something the crafting community does, not something Epson supports, and damage caused by non-genuine ink may not be covered under warranty. Three rules cut out most setup problems, ink contamination, and avoidable conversion failures.

Which Heat Press Do You Need?

This is where the design actually transfers into the blank, and the right machine depends entirely on what you are making. A mug press cannot make shirts. A flat platen cannot press a mug or wrap evenly around a tumbler. Before you buy any press, check its platen size, maximum opening or thickness clearance (this decides whether thick plaques and tiles fit at all), pressure adjustment, voltage, amperage, temperature controls, warranty, and whether replacement parts are available.

There Is No Universal Temperature or Time

Every settings chart you find online, including the manufacturer ones, is a starting reference and nothing more. A word on nonstick sheets. Reusable nonstick sheets are popular, but if ink reaches one, it can retain the dye and pass it onto a later project. In some fabric workflows they also trap moisture. Clean, uncoated butcher paper, thrown away after each press, is the safer default for conventional sublimation.

Knowing your platen’s real temperature matters more than most beginners expect: a press showing 400F can be running 20 degrees cooler, and that alone explains a lot of faded prints. Color accuracy does not come from the software alone. It comes from the whole chain: printer, ink, paper, driver, software, and profile. Use either the printer maker’s supported print utility or a properly installed ICC workflow, but never let the design software and the printer driver both manage color at the same time. Most beginners do this backwards. They buy the printer first, then a press that does not suit the blank they actually wanted to make, then a case of blanks they never touch. Working from the product backwards costs less and wastes less.

Plenty of beginner lists push gear you do not need for months. Here is what to leave in the cart.

A cutting machine. You do not need a Cricut or Silhouette for printed sublimation transfers. It only earns its place if you also do HTV, stickers, or cut templates.

A tumbler press, unless tumblers are one of your first planned products. It is a single-purpose machine.

A dedicated convection oven, unless you have decided oven-rated drinkware is a core product. Remember it can never go back to food.
